April Is Healthy Parks Month

 

The month of April is “Healthy Parks Month” throughout Los Angeles County.  The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation implemented the program in response to the alarming number of overweight and unfit children, teen and adults in Los Angeles County.

 

Call your local park today or call (213) 738-2751 for more information.  Below is a  schedule of events celebrating “Healthy Parks Month” in the Fourth District.

 

Facility:          Adventure Park

Program:  Spring Family Fun/Fitness Day

Location:  Outdoors West of the Senior Center

Date:  April 5

Time:  9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Description:  This program will include soccer, basketball, volleyball, healthy snacks, arts and crafts, face painting, a flea market, entertainment and resource booths.

Program:  Family Health Awareness Fair

Location:  Outdoors in Picnic and Turf Area

Date:  April 26

Time:  10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Description:  This program will include basketball skills competition, family exercise, arts and crafts, face painting and dental and health resource education.

Program:  Healthy Snack, Gardening & Exercise Program

Location:  Recreation Room, Fitness Center & Patio

Date:  April 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

Time:  4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Description:  The children will participate in gardening, be introduced to healthy snacking and receive fitness instructions and participate in exercise.

Program:  Nothin But Net 4 on 4 Basketball Tournament

Location:  Cerritos Park Gymnasium

Date:  April 12

Time:  9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Description:  Ages 18 & under.  This program is a 4 on 4 basketball tournament for youth ages 18 and under.  Being put on by The American Red Cross and LA County Teens.  The cost to participate is $40 per team and includes lunch.  All proceeds will benefit the Malaria Initiative to Save Lives in Africa and Asia.

Program:  Volleyball Under the Lights

Location:  Baseball Diamond # 4

Date:  April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

Time:  6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Description:  The community is invited out to play singles, doubles or 6 person team games under the lights while enjoying music and healthy snacks.

Program:  A Road to a Healthier Lifestyle

Location:  Community Room

Date:  April 3, 10, 17, 24

Time:  4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Description:  Every Thursday the after-school program children and other community youth in the Manzanita Park community will receive nutrition facts, participate in fun exercises and be provided healthy snacks.

Program:  Soccer Skills Competition

Location:  Pathfinder Soccer Field

Date:  April 18

Time:  5:00 p.m. to  8:00 p.m.

Description:  The program will consist of soccer cone dribbling, 9-ball and an obstacle course competition.  The competition is open to all ages and the winners will receive a prize.

Program:  Rope Sports and make it and take it Healthy Snacks

Description:  The program is designed to introduce participating youth to Rope Sports and Healthy Snacking.

Program:  Health & Fitness Camp

Location:  After School Day Camp

Description:  The children in the after school program will participate in a weekly walking club which will include health education and snacks.

Program:  Senior Fitness Program

Date:  April 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29

Time:  8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Description:  Seniors will be provided specific and specialized exercise classes twice a week during the month of April.
