More than 10,000 storm water catch basins located across the South Bay have recently been cleaned, inspected and upgraded by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The program involved a total of 10,300 catch basins located in 18 area cities and unincorporated areas, stretching from El Segundo to Long Beach, including the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The catch basins are located throughout commercial, industrial and residential areas, and are not limited to major streets and intersections. As part of the program, each drain was cleaned of trash and debris, and inspected for any potential damage. Additionally each drain was painted with a warning symbol indicating that any material swept or carried into the drain.

Routine cleaning of storm water catch basins ensures that trash and potentially environmentally-harmful products that are caught in the basins will not be carried downstream into the ocean.
