Friends of the Fourth
District:
The holiday season is a special time for all of us, filled with
peace and generosity and the blessings brought by family and
friends. We are fortunate to be part of a community and a nation
rich in blessings and traditions that are highlighted during this
time of year.
As we enter into the Holiday season and the spirit of giving that
comes with it, I encourage each of you to find ways to give back in
the New Year. Our communities – from the school down the street to
the senior center across town – are constantly in need of the
special compassion and help volunteers have to offer. Our nation has
always depended on the efforts of the experienced and dedicated
people who commit themselves to giving back.
As former President George Bush said in his 1991 State of the Union
address, “We all have something to give. If you know how to read,
find someone who can’t. If you have a hammer, find a nail. If you’re
not hungry, not lonely, not in trouble – find someone who is.”
We have so much to be grateful for as citizens of this great
country. My hope for the New Year is that this gratitude is
transformed into a spirit of volunteering – to giving back some of
the many blessings we have received. Volunteering is not just an
isolated act. It is a constant habit.
As we think of the importance of volunteering in our communities,
our thoughts also turn to the fearless and dedicated women and men
of our military – each of them also a volunteer.
Each of these courageous Americans have made the choice to not only
defend our freedom, but to also defend the cause of peace around the
globe.
May God continue to bless our troops. May they each know of our
heartfelt thanks for their service and of our hopes that they will
safely return to their loved ones.
From Julie and I and our entire family, you have our best wishes for
a safe and peaceful Holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
